Our History
| Built in 1905, the original building served as Newton’s and Conover’s first public elementary school. |
|
| In the early 1930s, the south and north wings were added. The auditorium and other classrooms were part of the south wing. In the 1970s the building became the junior high school and then became vacant in the ealry 80s. A few years later the Newton-Conover school administration offices moved in and still occupy the center and north sections of the building. In 1987, a newly formed community theatre group, namely The Green Room started using the auditorium in the south wing and soon the auditorium drew in more crowds as the theatre group grew in popularity. The Newton-Conover Auditorium Authority was formed in 1990 to first raise money needed to renovate the auditorium and surrounding rooms and then to continue its operations as a renting and presenting venue. Most of the surrounding classrooms were transformed into the existing Art Gallery, kitchen and office space. |
